The Basswood body on this guitar keeps it nice and light making it comfortable to play, especially for long periods and while standing; additionally, some say Basswood lends a balanced yet warm tone to guitars.
The Tribute ASAT Classic has a comfortable “Medium C” neck profile which is easy to play and has a 9” fingerboard radius. This radius is slightly more curved than most modern fingerboards and makes fretting chords a breeze without compromising your ability to play leads and bends. The maple fingerboard makes for a very smooth playing experience and it has been said that maple adds a snap and brightness to the tone.
Pickups and Hardware
The ASAT Classic features two Leo Fender-designed Magnetic Field Design (MFD) single coil pickups. MFDs use a ceramic bar magnet underneath the coil with soft iron pole pieces – this has the benefit of producing greater output per wind. In real terms, this basically means you get hotter pickups with less overall hum. The ASAT Classic is a versatile guitar capable of smooth Jazz and Blues sounds as well as more biting, driven tones thanks to these higher output pickups.
The hardware is fairly true to the original design, however, the use of individual brass saddles is a great feature as brass is known for its resonance and the individual saddle design makes for improved intonation and greater tuning stability.
Here’s What G&L Say About the ASAT Classic
The G&L ASAT Classic is Leo’s final word on the traditional single-cutaway bolt-on axe. Framed in a classic boxed-steel bridge, the single-coil Magnetic Field Design™ bridge pickup created by Leo Fender delivers crisp attack with complex harmonics while individual brass saddles offer modern levels of intonation refinement. Flip to the single-coil MFD™ neck pickup and you’ll discover a delectably rich tonal palette, from round clean jazz tones to thick, gritty blues. Put ‘em together and you’ll find a whole ‘nother level of heaven.
The Tribute® Series ASAT Classic is dripping with Leo mojo at a price attainable for every working musician. Once you play a G&L Tribute Series, you’ll never look back.
